Year 12 Masterclass Events, 10-11 June 2021

Year 12 welcomed 54 presenters who gave virtual workshops on career paths and opportunities

After last year’s event was cancelled due to covid, we were determined to make this year’s Masterclass event as good as possible for the year 12 pupils, who need all the help they can get with finding an interesting career.  We welcomed 54 presenters to give virtual interactive workshops on their own careers and the journeys they took to get there and to give pupils a taste of the sort of tasks they might be invited to perform in those careers.  Many of the presenters were parents of Borlase pupils, ex-Borlase students or contacts of staff (we are always looking for new speakers with interesting careers - please contact me or Caroline Wingrove at enquiries@swbgs.com if you could help us).

We started Thursday with a keynote speech from Mark Gloyens, Brewing Director of Rebellion Brewery who is an ex-Borlasian and who gave a fascinating insight into his unusual career path.  Friday started with a keynote address from Mike Birkhead, WIldlife Producer of such wonderful and touching films as Echo of the Elephants, who talked about how to get into wildlife film-making and showed us some of his extraordinary footage of tiger fights and elephant attacks, explaining how some moments of filming are scarier than others. Pupils were able to choose 8 other workshops to attend, ranging from engineering to working in genetics, from dentistry to nursing and from media production to social research.  Teachers accompanied each presenter and were able to enable interactive group work to take place such as making podcasts, analysing Hogwart’s Academy from a management consultancy perspective and coming up with ideas for developing and marketing a shampoo bar.  Feedback from the pupils was very positive and some of them became interested in careers they had never thought of, as a result of our two Masterclass days.  Next year we hope to be back to the live workshops!
